The unabated emissions from the Italian UCI Mountain Bike World Cup event (June 29th - July 2nd) will be offset by supporting a project in Laos, Southeast Asia. The event was recognized among the Trentino “Eco-Eventi” also in 2023
2022 was a significant year for Val di Sole Bikeland in terms of development of its environmental approach. Both the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup Grand Finale in Daolasa di Commezzadura and the UCI Cyclocross World Cup stage in Vermiglio, reached carbon neutrality through the collaboration with Climate Partner.
Looking ahead to the new edition of the Italian UCI Mountain Bike World Cup stage, scheduled from June 29th to July 2nd, Grandi Eventi Val di Sole and Val di Sole Tourism Board have strengthened their commitment to reducing the event's carbon footprint, further reducing the carbon print. The unabated emissions will be offset by supporting an environmental project in Laos, Southeast Asia.
The electricity grid in the Luang Namtha region, Northern Laos, currently relies on fossil fuels, but the construction of the Nam Long hydroelectric power plant, which is the focus of the offset project supported by Val di Sole, will help to reduce the use of energy from fossil sources, saving approximately 20,860 tons of CO2 per year.
Water-generated energy, as it is produced without the use of fossil fuels, is considered zero-emission. The exploitation of renewable energy is essential to address the issue of global warming while ensuring long-term energy supply.
Furthermore, Val di Sole was included once again among Trentino’s “Eco-Eventi”. With this label, the Autonomous Province of Trento recognizes virtuous organizations that stand out for their efforts to reduce the environmental impact of events.
Among the measures implemented, Val di Sole partners with Dolomiti Energia to rely on energy 100% produced from renewable sources, and local water will be freely available to all event participants through the installation of fountains in the parterre area, and will not be served in plastic bottles. The commitment to waste differentiation is also noteworthy: in the 2023 edition, the refuse collection points will be concentrated in the food-serving stands. Instead, the use of plastic will be minimized and replaced with biodegradable materials.
Special attention will also be given to actions aimed at encouraging fans to travel to the event by bicycle or train: Val di Sole is the only event of the UCI World Cup easily accessible by rail, thanks to the Trento-Malé line service at the Daolasa station, which is just a few hundred meters away from the race camp. The catering and hospitality areas will feature locally sourced products or products with a low carbon footprint, including vegetarian and vegan options.
