COMMEZZADURA (VAL DI SOLE – TRENTINO), 11 SEPTEMBER 2016 – The UCI Mtb World Championships Val di Sole celebrated the first quarter century of Italian downhill world championships history, an event organized by creative Pier Paolo “Pippo” Marani. In Daolasa, the famous Black Snake featured many Italian downhill athletes as well as the fresh winners of the Masters title in Val di Sole, Corrado Hérin and Giovanna Bonazzi (50-54 men and women). It was a very touching event Daolasa-Commezzadura, dragging you back in history and paying homage to the pioneers of the national mountain biking movement. This is the case of great Bruno Zanchi who at the unforgettable 1991 Worlds at Il Ciocco conquered the junior world title. Zanchi, who could not ride due to physical problems, has never abandoned mountain biking, passing to enduro where he clinched excellent results as athlete and now as team manager (Airoh Ion Santa Cruz). The same stands for Corrado Hérin winner of the downhill World Cup in 1997, with team Pila-Black Arrows-MTB Hérin School working in one of the most famous national downhill resorts. The legends’ Downhill involved also other important names and their participation made the event even more special: Walter Belli, ex trialist and downhiller, looking for the “perfect speed” after the accident that left him on a wheelchair two years ago. Watching him next to Steve “Peaty” Peat, great British athlete who in Val di Sole will have an end-of-career Special Party on Sunday afternoon, and the great Italian champion, Alan Beggin, touched the hearts of all the people present around the finish line of the Black Snake in Val di Sole. “One of the most beautiful moments in my life … thank you Pippo Marani” commented Walter Belli portrayed next to Peaty and Beggin.
Il Ciocco ’91 Worlds and then those in Livigno 2005 and Val di Sole 2008 have been celebrated with the presence of other celebrities present in Val di Sole for various reasons linked to the 2016 world event: theatrical Red Bull commentator Rob Warner (former world class downhiller and the first British athlete to win a World Cup round in 1996) and UCI delegate David Vasquez Lopez.
This very exciting and nostalgic side event further enriched the thick programme of UCI MTB World Champs, which will come to an end with the party dedicated to Steve Peat, at 16.00.
