MTB WORLD MASTERS VAL DI SOLE 2016 KICK OFF WITH ITALY PROTAGONIST
WITH FOUR TITLES, TWO SILVERS AND FOUR BRONZE MEDALS IN THE SIX RACES
VERMIGLIO (VAL DI SOLE – TRENTINO), 31 August 2016 – Italy is the great protagonist of the first day 2016 UCI Mtb World Championships Masters in Val di Sole taking place in Vermiglio, in western Trentino after conquering four gold medals, two silver and four bronze. After the first six races Italian athletes prove to be the strongest at international level in Cross country.
On the new track at San Leonardo lakes (4.5km and 190 elevation gain) the gold medal goes round the neck of Oscar Lazzaroni (2R Bike Store) in the 40-44 category, Gilberto Perini (Avis Pratovecchio Errepi Lee) in 50-54 category and Natale Bettineschi (Boario Asd) in the 55-59 category. Silvano Janes (Brao Caffè - Unterthurner) clinches his 11th world title (60-64 category) of which 8 in Mtb and 3 in road cycling. As Lazzaroni he took part in the first UCI World Championship held in Durango (Usa) in 1990.
The gold is enriched by the silver medals of Claudio Zanoletti (2R Bike Store) 55-59 category and Roberto Viviani (Racing Rosola) 60-64 category.
On the third step of the podium stood Anzio Massimo Folcarelli (Race Mountain promo Ciclyng) in cat. 40-44, Sauro Nocenti (Cavallino Specialized) cat. 45-49, Nereo Canale (Scavezzon Squadra Corse) cat. 50-54 and Renzo Valentini (Team Bsr) cat. 60-64.
Among the new rainbow jerseys there is Irish Robin Seymour, boasting 20 national Elite titles, the participation in Sidney Olympics 2000 and Atene 2004, and 15 national titles in cyclo-cross. Noteworthy are silver medal won by French Fredrich Frech (40-44) and Spanish Francesc Xavier Carnicer Roig (45-49) and Francisco Javier Salamero Subias (50-54).
No Italian made it to the podium in the category over 65 won by the French athlete Christian Jupillat who after three rounds beat Spanish Roberto Baserba Colom. New Zealander Steve Moffat came in third.
Tomorrow the two most eagerly awaited races of the men’s programme will be held: 30-34 and 35-39 featuring Italian Ivan Degasperi, gold two years ago and silver last year, Mirco Balducci (Toscana, team Tondi Sport, Italian Champion XCO Master2 - 9 Italian titles won in a row from 2008) and Fabio Zampese (Veneto, team Bike Pro Action, Italian Champion XCO Master1 - 4 times Italian Champion – bronze in 2015).
In the women’s races, Italian dreams of glory rely Eloise Tresoldi (Lombardia, team SC Triangolo Lariano, 2nd in the Italian Championship Elite Women Sport, 3rd in Val di Sole Marathon Classic), Chiara Selva (Friuli Venezia Giulia, team Spezzotto, Italian Champion XCO Women1), Silvia Filiberti (Emilia Romagna, Lugagnano Off Road, Italian Champion XCO Women2), Valentina Rocca (Veneto, Team Todesco, 10th in Val di Sole Marathon), Roberta Seneci (Veneto, team Racing Rosola, 3rd at the Italian Championships XCO Women2) and Lorena Zocca (Veneto, Sc Barbieri, four Italian titles). But surprises are not excluded.
Some of the stars of 2015 World Championships in Andorra as Norwegian Gjertrud Bø protagonist in the 50 category with French Corinne Bedard, but also Argentina’s Graciela Elina Vargas, Spanish Marga Fullana and USA’s Cameron Urban, will be at the start in Vermiglio as World champions. But Italian girls will not be intimidated.
