VERMIGLIO (VAL DI SOLE – TRENTINO), 1 SEPTEMBER 2016 – Italian ladies fly high at 2016 UCI World Championships Masters Val di Sole 2016 thanks to the three gold medals won by Valentina Garattini (Niardo for Bike) in cat. 30-34, Camilla Bertossi (Asd Bike Store Costermano) in cat. 50-54 and Chiara Selva (Spezzotto Bike Team) in cat. 35-39 with an entirely Italian podium. In addition to the three victories there are three silver medals and three bronze. A memorable day for the Italian cycling federation.
In Cat 35-39 Chiara Selva took the lead in the first round and in the last two she managed to keep Lorena Zocca (Sc Barbieri) behind, her first World victory after winning several GrandFondo races and four national titles in Cross-country and Marathon. The new world champion (in her palmares there are several Italian wins, also in cyclocross as well as European Marathon and Cyclocross) she finished in 1h16:44. The race consisted of four laps held at San Leonardo lakes in Vermiglio. The rival for the gold finished 14” behind. Bronze medal went to Karin Tosato (ASD Team Emmebike), who took part in 1997 World Champs Junior and with today's result she crowns a 21-year long career.
In Cat 30-34 Valentina Garattini was protagonist of a solitary: she finished the four laps in 1h16:44 with an advantage of 1:04 ahead of the other Italian Monica Maltese (Pavan free Bike) and 4:22 ahead of Spanish Mar Franco Penuela
In cat. 50-54 gold and bronze went to Camilla Bertossi and Luisa De Lorenzo Poz (Team Estebike Zordan) . Silver was clinched by Sweden's Maria Sedemark. Noteworthy athlete is Luisa de Lorenzo Poz who lives in Dolo, she is known as the Venetian, it's her first great world result, but in the past she raced in Elite on road. She won the Val di Sole Marathon.
In cat. 40-44 Italian ladies again protagonists even if victory was clinched by Spanish Margarita Riera Fullana in 56:24. The queens on the podium are Chiara Mandelli (Team Spacebikes) 44” behind the Spanish and Silvia Filiberti (Lugagnano Off Road) in 4:07. The silver medal athlete won a fourth place at 2015 World Champs in Andorra 2015 and the Italian title in her category. Silvia Filiberti did a positive debut in cross-country after a career dedicated to mainly Marathon events
Foreign podium in Cat 45-49 with three laps race finished by the new world champion, Sweden's Therese Lundqvist in 59:42. Silver went to Monica Marina Velasquez de la Matta (4:23) from Peru and bronze to French Frederique Michel (a 4:56). Fourth Italian Cristina Dusina (Team Piton) with a time of 5:05.
No Italian athlete in cat. 55+ , on the podium stood Australian Sharon Heap Linlea, USA's Lillian Pfluke and Swedish Carina Boerjesson.
Today's medals add up to the four golds, two silvers and four bronze won yesterday by the men. In the afternoon the two most eagerly awaited men's races will be held.
